Hi, New to this forum.
I have a 55 plate Pathfinder 2.5 SVE (diesel), bought it from a dealer in Peterborough this year and have had some problems. I have the drivers side door handle problem (interioir handle only works intermitently), heater problem (thermostat was changed earlier this year but problem has returned and now in the winter this all terrain vehicle has now started with an engine noise which is a little baffling. Took it to the local dealer who after saying they couldn't hear anything simply want me to take it in for a diagnostic check (£65 plus vat) or they cant do anything, thats all I ever get from dealers which is hence my nickname. Basically the engine is making a muffled droning kind of noise, quite low in tone and follows the engine revs, started last week on a journey in the cold, most things had frozen up like the washer jets etc but the engine was running fine, I would say the noise has gradually got worse. It almost sounds like it could be the exhaust blowing from the manifold, but I am worried it may be something worse. I have noticed that sometimes when starting the car the battery light starts flashing and the noise is not present, upon starting again the battery light is not on and the noise returns. Any ideas which might mean I dont need to take it to the dealers for a possibly useless diagnostics check. PS. Current status when running - reaches temperature normally, not overheating, engine sounds normal apart from this noise, heater works when at speed so higher revs but goes cold at idle, need to open the window to get out. Cheers. |

I have only had a Pathfinder a month so not that familiar with them. Have you tried to locate more specifically where the noise is coming from?
It may be a fan or anciliary equipment drive belt not tensioned correclty or bearing noise from an item of anciliary equipment e.g. alternator, water pump, power steering pump. |

Thanks for the reply.
I have had the RAC out to have a look and was lucky to get a very knowledgeable mechanic, he has narrowed it down to the alternator bearings so a good calculated guess there. As to the dealer, I think I will sack them off as a bad job in the future. |
