starting problem

   hi there,
i,m new to forums so apologize if i,m doing this wrong !!
can anyone help with my starting problem , its weird
if i try starting using a little accelerator it will start quite often but if i try without touching the accelerator it will not start, sometimes for days. but i have just discovered that if i undo the fuel filler cap the car will then start, but again only with accelerating.
any help will be very gratefully received
