Hi
new member here, i've just purchased a 2002 Xtrail SE+. I've had the car about two months now and I've been very impressed with it after my freelander which cost me an arm and a leg in the 18 months that I owned it.
The Xtrail is far more comfortable and much more powerful vehicle than the Freelander,I'm hoping it will be as good as my earlier Discovery that I had and will be as competent in the winter, as I live on the side of a welsh mountain and really need a good 4wd in the winter.
I do have a problem at the moment that I hope someone will be able to help me with. The car has started to have a problem with cold starting in the recent cold mornings,it is taken four or five attempts to start and is sometimes stalling after a couple of minutes of running.
The Heater plug light is going out as it should when the ignition is turned on but it takes 4 or 5 times before it starts. Has anyone had any issues with this and is it a job that I could tackle myself

Hi and welcome to CN.

on a 2002 diesel with starting issues on cold mornings...I'd be looking at when the glow plugs were last changed.

I'd change them and that should sort your little issue out.

Very easy to do but also fiddly, just like changing spark plugs but you have the electric connections on the top that you have to take off first, DO NOT get them mixed up.

Do one at a time. and when you put the new ones in and put the electrical connection back on, DO NOT do them up too tight as they are only small 8mm nuts and don't need much.

These glow plugs can be expensive but since they last so long its not much of a big deal.

Any motor factor will be able to give you the right glow plugs for your motor just by giving them the full Reg number.

hope this helps and let us know if we can help with anything else.

Thanks Ratchet
Just a quick question though is it better to do this when the engine is warm, you also say that I need to do them one at a time, in looking at the plugs I notice that the electrical connection is a single connection that is connected to the plugs in unison. do I need to remove this first then replace the plugs one by one.
the reason I ask is it better to do when the engine is warm as they look very flimsy and I have heard of heater plugs snapping on other makes of cars.

Thanks once again

Andrew.

it may look like a small metal rail across the top of the glow plugs? And may have plastic caps ontop of the 8mm nuts this all needs removed and then the glow plugs removed and new fitted, doing this while warm wont cause any harm and may make it easier to remove the plugs, but to find if they have fixed the problem the car would then need to be left to go cold.
hope this helps
Adam

Well pointed out, I should have put that in my first post.

yes, warm the lump a little first, does make it a lot easier to remove the plugs and you can take the connection off and then remove the plugs but I normally take it of each plug as I go.

You can do it either way you feel most comfy with as long as your careful when removing the 8mm nuts and removing the plugs and putting them back.

Just take your time with it and you'll be perfectly fine.
