, THE CANADIAN PRESS The chair of the C. gw2 gold D. Howe Institute has resigned from his job after giving a highly partisan speech at the Liberal Party convention this weekend. 

Bill Morneau, who is touted as a potential “star” candidate for the party in the 2015 election, left his position effective immediately, the institute announced in a press release Monday. 

In a speech to Liberal delegates in Montreal on Saturday, Morneau accused the Conservative government of neglecting the economy while playing partisan politics. 

“Harper Conservatives turn a blind eye to these problems, their minds focused on partisan politics of the very worse kind,” he said in the speech. 

Morneau, who runs personnel firm Morneau Shepell, sits on a panel of advisers appointed by Trudeau to give advice on economic issues. 

After the speech, Morneau said he was speaking for himself and not the C.D. Howe Institute. 

But on Monday morning, C.D. Howe president William Robson announced that vice-chair Hugh MacKinnon would take over from Morneau. 

Robson said that Morneau “understands the critical importance of non-partisanship, and is doing the right thing by stepping down.” 

The statement quoted Morneau saying that, as an adviser to the Liberals, “I believe that I should stand aside before the end of my term this May to ensure that the Institute’s non-partisan reputation remains intact.” 

Morneau maintains he is still deciding whether he will seek a Liberal nomination, though a Huffington Post report this weekend suggested he’s aiming for the riding of Toronto Centre. 

Chrystia Freeland, who was also recruited by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to boost the party’s economics bona fides, won the riding in a byelection last fall. It will be split off into two ridings for the 2015 election, potentially giving the Liberals a shot at another seat in downtown Toronto. 

The C.D. Howe Institute provides non-partisan analysis and opinion on public policy and was critical of the income-splitting plan advanced by the Conservatives in the 2011 election. 

The party has shown signs in recent weeks that it may abandon the campaign promise.
