This thread is a sort of car diary for our new Nissan Note Tekna 1.6 Auto. We picked it up from the dealers on Friday 14th of August. We spent the next day loading it up for a long trip and set off on Saturday as the sun started to drop below the rooftops. It takes less than 5 minutes to get to the motorway system and then it's motorway and dual carriageway all the way to the door at the other end. The auto box makes driving a lot easier but we haven't really seen the benefit of that yet. That's because even with a manual box, the trip down would very rarely need a gear change. I remember once covering 196 miles without changing out of 5th gear in our last car, a Citroen Picasso. I have to admit that there were a couple of complaints from the car at the M3 roundabout. The Sat/Nav comes under the gun next. I'm a bit disappointed, to be honest. I've got a Navman sat/nav system and it is sooooo much easier to set up and use. I guess that somewhere in the package of info that we got with the car there will be some way to change the voice from dealing in Kilometres into talking of miles but I haven't found it yet. I also miss the warnings about speed cameras. Speaking of those, does anyone know if there is a way to add that feature? So how did the car do on the trip down here? Well, according to the trip computer, we averaged 72.0 MPH from our entry on to the motorway at home to our exit from it about 200 yards from where I now sit. We did that at an average fuel consumption of 41.8 MPG. Have I found and bad points? Just the two. 1 ... The colour name. The colour itself is fine but "Cafe Latte"?? ... Gimme a break. 2 ... The only real complaint I have is that the car is just a shade to slim at the tailgate. What I mean by that is that although the car is wide enough, the length of an item that you can get in the back is resticted by interior bumps. I'm disabled and my walking frame won't fit without a little bit of dismantling work. But that's fine. It's only 2 thumb wheels so no biggie. OK, so that's the trip down. I'll do more later as we use it round town. |

OK, time for an update. I can't say very much about the Note's good or bad points while we were there because, believe it or not, once we arrived and parked up, the Nissan did not get used again all the time we were there until the day we left. All I can tell you is that the average speed for the whole of the trip (there and back) was 64 MPH and the average fuel consumption was 44.8 MPG. I don't know about you but, for a 1.6 AUTO, I don't think that's bad at all. So there you go. That little bit of info may help somebody to make a decision. Cheers, Steve |

Aye, so far, so very good, in fact. Another point to add though. In the first post, I said that I couldn't get my walking jobbie in the boot without dismantling it.... Not true. I found that if I removed the false floor panels in the boot and the parcel shelf, it fits in just as easily as it did with the Picasso. |

Hi Steve, like you I have a new Note. In your posting you ask about the sat/nav, I've done a separate posting as to that but in answer to your two questions, kph to miles, go into the Setup and you can quickly go from kph to mph. Warnings as to Speed Cameras, you can via eBay obtain a database of these for about £25 ish but it this is done by an amateur. You do ger a warning as to these cameras but without any noise etc, just that you are coming to 'Camera XXXXX location xxxxx. I prefer to use my own Sat/Nav [TomTom Rider or an Inforad] as updates are available weekly plus give an indication if one is exceeding the speed limit. Hope this is of use. ------------- Gray |

Steve, another Steve here - are you obsessed with the on-board computer - or is it just me? - I've never had one before and I am fascinated with the cruise control lol. Actually drove to Scotland using cruise more than I should have  Still learning and finding things on it. haha |

Hi Steve Mk2 I stay away from the cruise control. Call me Mr Tightwad but I like to get as many miles from a gallon of petrol as I can and using the cruise control feature is like throwing money out of the window as you drive along. We live within 200 yards of a motorway on-ramp and the motorway system takes us to the very centre of Blackpool which is about 35 miles from home. In other words, not much stop/start driving and a constant speed can be expected, especially at 11pm if going for a night at the Casino. So, on 2 Friday nights we went to Blackpool in the same Fiat Stilo. One time using the cruise option there and back. Two weeks later using pedal power instead. Cruise control, set at 69 MPH, gave a reading for the round trip of 42 MPG Pedal power gave a reading of 56 MPG. OK, I admit that with pedal power I may have dropped down to 65 at times but I may also have broken the speed limit by 10 MPH at times before checking the speed and slowing back down again. So, no cruise control for me. Signed..... Mr Tight Git, lol |

Lol - my missus and especially my mate thinks I'm obsessed with MPG - never considered that with the cruise. I'd assumed (possibly incorrectly) that on runs, by setting it at a fixed 65mph (for example) it would be more effective than "pedal power" as you called it. I'll now need to test out both theories. - on a serious note (no pun intended) can anyone confirm or speculate if and why cruise control would be less economical / efficient than just pedal power alone at the same/similar speed. I'm hoping to get a real good run soon - just depends on work patterns and other commitments, but a trip up to the Highlands or Wales or possibly Devon/Cornwall should be a fair stretch. The diesel seems to show some outrageous quoted MPG - surely this cannot be accurate? Not that I'm complaining, but some amazing figures can be popping up on the screen over certain bursts - 80mpg plus - of course the average will be much less than this, but it is inspiring to read it. £41 for the first fill (and it brimmed it) produced 514 miles and the fuel light had been on for a while - yet still only 39.85 litres to fill it - meaning despite the fuel light been on for a good while, there was still a load left in the tank.....sorry i told you I was obsessed  12.5 mile to the £ at a time I was learning to use the vehicle suits me. Imagine what is possible when I learn to find the right gear and stop thinking I still have a 1.0l Micra!  |
