Last year we purchased a nissan xtrail columbia 07 and we
have found that on start up it has a very noisy engine, in
fact it sounds like a bag of spanners, this only lasted a
couple of miles but recently seems to be rattly most of the
time, we have had it back to our local nissan dealer and
they say there is nothing wrong, could anybody please
advise as this now driving us mad.

Welcome to CN

it could be a number of things from the cam, lifters or even the timing chain

first thing i would do is flush the oil and do a oil and filter change and see if it less noisy

if its a diesel thay rattle a fair bit esp after 20-30k miles or so as the enginge starts to bed in and lossen up a bit

Any you like tbh as long as its to nissans specs for you engine as for the oil filter use a genuine nissan one then the dealer is none the wiser to what youve done

2005 x-trail have the same problem, chattering noise when
engine cold but seemed to go away when warmed up. I first
noticed this when the car was 2 years old, only to be told
to put some WD40 onto the pulleys, this did stop it but
only for about 3/4 days. As stated earlier it is still
there but much more severe and no one wants to pinpoint
what is causing or what can be done. VERY ANNOYING.

It may be woth checking the top chain tensioner first. Many of the early shape x-Trails suffered with a slack top hydraulic tensioner (at full extension ) when the car is cold.
