My wife's Note has developed a peculiar noise, sort of a low hum when driving. It seems to be speed rather than engine related. I have jakced it up and had look underneath. Exhaust seems OK. All wheels turing freely not brakes sticking, no bearing noise ( I thought it might be a wheel bearing) no significant play in dirve shafts. Drive belt looks ok.

If pushed I would say it is coming from the back of the car but it is difficult to tell becasue the low frequency makes it hard to tell.

Anyone any ideas?

check tyre pressures, as low pressure allows the tyres to deform more and that can create the noise. with low profile tyres a visible check is no good, you have to use a gauge, I've seen such tyres look OK but measure less than 15 psi.

hum from from the rear poss wheel bearings, jack the car up and grab the wheel at the top and bottom and see if theres any play do the same at the sides if in doubt whip the drums off and inspect

Fair comment on the tyre pressures I will check those. Bearings already checked, I have trailers and am used to doing them.

the other cause of tyre hum is a bulge in the side walls.

Tyre pressure all within a 1lb or so of recommended pressure. I will have a look at the tyre walls.

Also check to see if any balance weights have fallen off?

I would expect dropped weights and bulges to exhibit a rythmic sound each time the wheel turned this is fairly constant low hum (like a wheelk bearing but they appear fine).

That would seem true, so may be it is the wheel bearings. Do you know which side of the car it comes from, if so switch the wheels around and see if the symptoms follow suit.

Local Garage has diagnosed rear wheel bearing. Maybe I didn't spin wheel fast enough to hear it because that was the first thing I looked at. There did not appear to be any play either. We will see if it has gone when I pick it up tomorrow.

what's the age and mileage on those bearings?

2006 Vehicle Mileage cc. 30K I think. I will check later. Another reason why I thought bearings unlikely. I have had one wheel bearing fail on an old mini back in 1974ish. We will see when I get the vehicle back whether the noise has gone.

Thanks for the data, I've looked at the bearing data and they are only small opposed taper rollers in a captive bearing shell, Cheap and cheerful as most car parts are these days, it's also a simple and easy replacement procedure, I might just consider replacing the brake drums at the same time as they are not expensive either.

bearings do go. vaux novas and corsa are renowned for knocking out rear bearings. i got so use to doing the it only use to take me 15-20 to do both sides micras with 14"+ alloys knock out bearings too

one thing that puts me off on the note is the nyloc nuts on the hubs imho there a bad idea due to the heat and vibration - replace them every time you touch the hub

Is the vibration/hum/grumble there all the time or is it at certain speeds ? have you had the wheels balanced or even swapped the wheels diagonally front to back ?

Noise has gone so it was the bearing CC �70 inc fitting & VAT so not too bad.

Thanks for the info , there's nothing more difficult to diagnose than a sound you cannot hear. Did you have both sides done or just the one?

Just the one, if we hear the noise again it will be to the garage again a lot quicker.
